Crews have continued to make progress on One World Trade Center in downtown Manhattan.
One World Trade Center, formerly known as the Freedom Tower, has quickly become a prominent fixture in the New York City skyline over the past few years. The Wall Street Journal reports that the building, which represents a breakthrough in engineering research and development, was designed to comply with stringent sustainability and durability requirements.
The steel frame of the building also surpassed 100 stories late last month, according to Port Authority officials. The tower now stands more than 1,240 feet above the ground, and crews are working to finish construction on the structure, which will serve as the tallest such building in North America.
Still, that progress on One World Trade Center jumped from around 93 stories to more than 100 in only a week surprised some observers. The reasoning behind the jump, however, all comes down to math, according to the WSJ. One World Trade Center does not have floors between 93 and 100, which is a fairly common practice in tall buildings.
A Port Authority spokesperson said that some of the floors in One World Trade Center are taller than conventional heights in comparable buildings. What's more, the Port Authority noted that when construction is completed, the top of the tower would reach roughly 1,368 feet. Such a height is approximately equal to 104 stories, engineers said.
