James G. Speight

Consultant, CD & W Inc.

James G. Speight is an independent consultant, author, and lecturer with more than forty years of experience in energy and environmental issues.

Before joining CD & W Inc. as a consultant, he held positions at Western Research Institute as chief scientific officer and executive vice president (1984–1990) and then chief executive officer (1990–1998). He has held positions at Exxon Research and Engineering Company (1980–1984) and at the Alberta Research Council (1967-1980) as well as teaching positions at the University of Utah and the University of Trinidad and Tobago.

Speight has received numerous awards and honors, including the Diploma of Honor from the National Petroleum Engineering Society for Outstanding Contributions to the Petroleum Industry in 1995 and the Gold Medal from the Russian Academy of Sciences for Outstanding Work in the Area of Petroleum Science in 1996. He also received the degree of Doctor of Sciences, Scientific Research Geological Exploration Institute (VNIGRI), St. Petersburg, Russia. 1997 For Exceptional Work in Petroleum Science.

He earned a B.Sc. in chemistry and a Ph.D. in organic chemistry from the University of Manchester in England. He is the author and coauthor of more than thirty-five books and bibliographies related to fossil fuels, synthetic fuels, biofuels, fuel processing, and environmental issues and is the editor and founding editor of Petroleum Science and Technology. He is also the Editor-in-Chief of Energy Sources Part A and Energy Sources Part B.
